Distaffs / Looms/ Skalno
Hand-operated distaffs are one of the most interesting phenomena of Russian national arts. They are the most ancient devices for manufacturing yarn. By their design Russian wooden hand- operated distaffs were divided into two types: "root" and demountable (consisting of several parts) distaffs. Both of them consisted of two main parts - a vertical blade, to which a tow was attached, and a horizontal bottom, upon which a spinner sat. The "root" distaffs were cut out from a solid piece of wood: the bottom part - from a root, the blade - from a straight wood trunk. This is the most ancient type of distaffs.
